Given the fact that technology is one of the few truly bright spots in the U.S. economy, and the expectation that Facebook will file, the expectations are extraordinarily high for 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a fast guide to some of the solid reporting on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>The volatility in the stock market is making it more difficult for IPOs. SecondMarket\u2019s Barry Silbert recently pointed out in a <a title=\"VentureBeat interviews SecondMarket's Barry Silbert on IPOs\" href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2012\/01\/17\/secondmarket-facebook-ipo-private-shares-barry-silbert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VentureBeat interview<\/a> that&nbsp; \u201coften there are factors like the credit crisis or the situation in Europe affecting the markets. It\u2019s the reason entrepreneurs like myself never want to go public.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An <a title=\"Wall Street Journal &quot;New Stocks Need Windows of Opportunity&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203513604577144910012972898.html?mod=googlenews_wsj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article in <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> suggests that IPOs will come in waves &nbsp;as companies and investment bankers try to seize on market momentum to ensure strong starts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dollar volume of IPOs in registration currently stands at $14.8 billion, down from $15 billion at the beginning of last year, and $17 billion at the start of 2010, according to Dealogic. There are 145 companies waiting to debut, compared to 122 at this time last year,\u201d says the story.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"CNN Money on Facebook IPO\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2012\/01\/05\/markets\/facebook_ipo_2012_outlook\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;Renaissance Capital<\/a> estimates a somewhat higher count: 200 companies that have filed.<\/p>\n<p>Tech companies including Yelp, Twitter and Kayak, are receiving some of the most intense attention.<\/p>\n<p>Yelp filed its IPO plans late last year. Kayak has filed and amended a number of times, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>A handful of others <a title=\"Business Insider on Top IPOs in 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-five-tech-ipos-you-need-to-watch-this-year-2012-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are said to be possible or likely<\/a>, including Tumblr, Dropbox, SunGard, LivingSocial, Gogo Inc. and Glam Media. This 24\/7 Wall Street story <a title=\"24-7 Wall Street on Top IPOs in 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/247wallst.com\/2012\/01\/06\/the-17-most-important-ipos-to-watch-in-2012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lists 17 possible IPOs, most of them in the tech sector.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, of course, there\u2019s Menlo Park-based Facebook. <a title=\"All Things D on Facebook IPO\" href=\"http:\/\/allthingsd.com\/20120116\/is-facebook-ipo-on-track-for-late-may\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All Things Digital<\/a>, citing anonymous sources, said the company would go public in May.<\/p>\n<p>Just because there is a big backlog of IPOs doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019ll see all of them, or even most of them. Experts are divided on how much IPO activity we\u2019ll actually see.<\/p>\n<p>A <a title=\"CNN Money on Facebook IPO\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2012\/01\/05\/markets\/facebook_ipo_2012_outlook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">story on CNN\/Money asks and answers the question<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut can Facebook revive a stalled IPO market?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The short answer is no. &#8220;Facebook&#8217;s IPO is completely its own entity,&#8221; the story quotes Lise Buyer, principal of IPO consulting firm Class V Group.<\/p>\n<p>PricewaterhouseCoopers released a report <a title=\"GigaOm on Top IPOs in 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2011\/12\/20\/2012-should-be-another-big-year-for-tech-ipos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">covered by Gigaom<\/a> on the IPO market.
